Bulk Materials International Co. In celebration of its 20th Anniversary, Bulk Materials International Co. (BMI) held a conference in Atlantic City, New Jersey with suppliers, logistics partners, customers and employees. BMI has become one of the leading suppliers of products and services to the cement industry by recognizing that integrity is the foundation of the trust and reputation upon which the business was built. BMI was founded in 1986 by Peter D’Amico and Jerry Meusel capitalizing on the vision of sourcing high quality and economical raw materials as well as industrial by-products for cement manufacturing. Since 1986, BMI has become a prominent supplier to the global cement industry and the largest marketer of granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) into the U.S. through a number of pioneering initiatives. BMI now offers more than 20 products, ranging from iron oxide, to alumina products, to coal ashes and gypsum, and is one of the largest global suppliers of granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS). Use of these industrial byproducts and recycled materials that would otherwise overload landfills, also conserves natural raw materials. BMI was one of the first companies to import raw materials into the U.S. from international sources. BMI has succesfully coordinated longterm relationships with sources, developed strong logistics and operations knowledge with a technical expertise in the comprehension of customer needs and processes, along with new, productive applications. As a result of some of BMI's efforts, the demand for slags, coal ashes and FGD gypsum has soared. As the cement industry increasingly appreciates the durability, consistency and strength slag cement imparts to concrete, the use of slag cement in the United States, for example, has nearly tripled since 1996. With the recent increased focus on global warming, environmental concerns and CO2 emissions credits, the reclaiming of by-products and use of alternative materials, cement manufacturers are becoming more aware of their social, economic and environmental responsibility to address the issue of sustainable development. With rising energy and materials costs, and the adverse business impacts of poor environmental performance, maintaining the status quo is not a viable option. It is unrealistic, however, to assume that cement companies will be willing or able to incur significant costs in addressing sustainability issues unless there is a clear business case for doing so - linked to business profitability. Progressive cement companies have recognized that to remain competitive in the future, corporate sustainability is increasingly vital to their long-term strategy and success. BMI is on the leading edge of this technology movement, spearheading the education of the cement manufacturers on the benefits of utilizing byproducts and introducing product and service innovations that will allow companies to meet new demands for construction products with lower environmental impact, greater productivity and lower costs. BMI exists to serve only the cement industry. This singular purpose defines every action we take. It keeps all of us at BMI focused on making sure our customers
can rely on having the high-quality products they need, the marketing and technical support they require, and the solutions they seek for dealing with the constant challenge of keeping their companies and the cement industry
profitable and growing. |
